Learning to Tow in Terrible Weather – Building Confidence When Conditions Aren’t Perfect

Not every towing lesson is completed under blue skies, and today’s lessons were a perfect reminder of why training in a variety of conditions is so valuable.

Despite the wet, windy weather across the Bellarine Peninsula, both lessons went ahead safely. While the conditions were far from ideal, they provided a fantastic opportunity to learn how towing feels when the weather isn’t on your side.

Rain, strong winds and reduced visibility can make towing more challenging. Understanding how your vehicle and caravan respond in these conditions is an important part of becoming a safe and confident driver. During today’s lessons we focused on:

• Safe vehicle and caravan safety checks before setting off.

• Adjusting driving techniques for wet roads.

• Managing crosswinds and changing weather conditions.

• Maintaining safe following distances.

• Correct road positioning.

• Low-speed manoeuvring and parking.

• Building confidence while staying calm behind the wheel.

One of my students even sent me a message afterwards saying they successfully parked their caravan between trees on their own for the first time after the lesson. Another previous student also shared photos of parking their caravan perfectly first go, exactly as they were taught. Hearing feedback like this makes every lesson worthwhile.

While I would never recommend driving in severe weather unless necessary, learning with an experienced instructor in controlled conditions can give you the skills and confidence to handle unexpected situations safely if they arise during your travels.
